How I Built a Profitable Online Home Business

You Can Build a Website Business of Your Own, Too!

This is the story of my Site Build It Journey, and how I fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a successful online home business.

This page is a continuation of my About Kathi and Starting a Business From Home pages. I find that people don't really understand what it is I do and how I'm able to work from home and not hold a "real job." Surely, it's just a hobby, right?

If you read my About Kathi page, you might be wondering some of those same things. So, I thought I'd build this page to try and answer some of those questions and to explain further what Site Build It has come to mean to me. Because it changed my life... no question about it.

Let's Look at My Numbers...

It's February 2011 as I'm writing this, and I've had my SBI resume site (Powerful-Sample-Resume-Formats.com) for nearly 7 years.

Nowadays, I own 10 websites I built with the Site Build It suite of tools, and a few I built in other ways as well. I told you I like new challenges all the time! This BT site is one of my newest websites and I haven't done too much with it yet. But I will.

So, my resume site is my busiest and best earning site. Currently, I get about 10,000 visitors a day to it. My Motor-Scooters-Guide.com site is about 3 years old and gets more than 1000 visitors a day. The other sites are all under 500 visitors a day, but growing.

In terms of money, I earn between $1000 and $2500 most months. 65% of that is from the resume site and most of it is from Google Adsense ads (those "Ads by Goooogle") that I place on my content pages.

Plus every month I earn a few bucks by recommending products I think will help my visitors, for which I get a small commission if they buy them. And I have a few companies who advertise on my sites too.

It's not a fortune, but it does cover my mortgage and most of my bills. In time, I hope it will enable me to travel at will, help out my family and maybe buy us a bigger house.

The most important thing I want to convey here is that my income is steadily growing, day after day after day, whether I work on my websites or not. Of course, it grows much faster when I do a lot of work. But... it still grows, even on days when I have to run my mom around to the doctor, to the drugstore and to Walmart. I earn money while I travel, I earn money while I'm cooking, I even earn money while I sleep. It's pretty hard to argue with that, isn't it?

What's also hard to argue with is the feeling that you are in charge... of your life and your time. There is no way I could ever go back to working for others in a corporate job. No way on earth...

But Is It Really That Easy?

Well, I'd have to say both yes and no. You see, you can't just press a few buttons and expect the money to start rolling in. If that's what you think will happen if you go the Site Build It route to an online home business, then the answer is no, it won't be that easy.

The one thing you need to take away from this page about my Site Build It journey is it takes time, hard work and dedication to build a successful online home business. Don't underestimate it or you will be disappointed!

But that's all you need... hard work, time & commitment. You don't need exceptional writing skills or even technical knowledge. You don't even need to know anything about computers or websites.

You will have to learn a lot about how to have a home based business web site, but that learning is all part of SBI. You will be guided through the whole process. As long as you're willing to learn and work, you can do this, no matter what your background. So my answer to the original question is yes. It really is that easy. If I could do it, you can do it too.

How Much Time Will It Take?

When I launched my resume site in early summer of 2004, I worked on it about 8 hours every day for two and a half weeks. That got me about 35 pages, as I recall.

Over the next six months, I tweaked my existing pages and added more at a rate of a few every week. By the end of 2005, it had grown to over 100 pages. I'd probably worked on it 5 to 10 hours a week during that time. But after that, I pretty much stopped working on it regularly, due to life changes and starting new websites.

Even so, my visitors have kept growing and growing, along with the income it earns. It's pretty amazing.

The other Site Build It sites I've built have mostly been put up slower. But I find if I can spend 10 to 20 hours a week on a new site, I can get it to the point where it starts making money pretty fast, within a couple of months. Maybe not a lot of money at first, but I know it's coming...

What's really cool is that I put in the work and then I sit back and wait. A few months later, all that hard work pays off, but by then, I'm on to something else. So, multi-tasking is easy. Of course, if you want to just focus on one site, that works too. There are really no limits how far you can take a site!
